Locally SpeakingWanda Mitchell
by Wanda Mitchell

As I write this article on the anniversary of 9/11, I cannot help but reflect on everything our country has been through since that time. Shortly after we were attacked by an evil force such as this country has never known, our citizens came together in a manner we had not experienced in a very long time. American flags were flying everywhere. We were united and determined. Three short years later, we are divided and pointing fingers at one another.

In the days leading up to the elections in November, we are focusing on the candidates' past and not on what needs to be done for our future. We are refighting the Viet Nam war while our brave men and women are fighting a new war. I wonder if we are making them as proud here at home as they are making us over there? Are we serving them well?

As the battle heats up on the homefront over who will lead our country during the next fours years, I hope all of the name calling and skeletons hanging in dark closets do not overshadow the issues facing us today. Everyone has made mistakes. I want to know if they have learned from them and if so, will not repeat them in the future. I want the candidates to reveal their plans on leading us into a stronger, safer America.

There was never a "real" John Wayne. He was born Marion Ross and he made mistakes too. I don't expect our leaders to be flawless, I just want them to do the best they can in times like these.
